Welcome to the GMAF Newsletter! We pray it will encourage you in your Martial Arts and Outreach for Christ.
"Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you."
Jesus Christ
"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith."
The Apostle Paul
"These six things doth the Lord hate; yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother. Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life."
King Solomon
One of the aspects of martial arts that attracts many people is our emphasis on building Character. I heard a wise teacher many years ago say that martial arts is not about becoming a better fighter, but about becoming a better person. Character is at the core of martial arts. Without character a martial artist would be little more than a skilled thug. Character shapes martial artists into strong citizens, good fathers, mothers, sons and daughters.
Read the founding principles of most martial arts systems and you'll see the importance Character has in the art. Character traits of Honesty, Humility, Loyalty and Perseverance are paramount to the success of any martial artist. Here are some examples from the doctrine of several martial arts systems.
"Strive for the perfection of character!" "Defend the paths of truth! "Foster a spirit of effort!" "Honor the principles of etiquette!" "Refrain from violent behavior!"
"Always act in a courteous manner... During training, concentrate to the limit of your mental endurance. Give your all, mentally and physically, as training without concentration prevents advancement.... The physical and mental training of Karate should be combined as one. The heart, mind and body should be in unison at all times... Heed the advice of your teacher and of more advanced students of other schools. Listen to and never forget their advice... Listening and watching are key points to advancement... In order to advance, one must strive to obtain the true spirit of Karate... Training is on a continuous basis and one learns a little at a time. Do not take breaks in training as it will result in a step backwards... Always strive for advancement and when advanced, one must not brag or boast... Self-praise and over-confidence is a sickness that corrupts training... Refrain from over-eating, drinking and smoking, for these bad habits hinder the effectiveness of your training... Karate training has no limits. Step by step, study by study, and one day in the future you will undoubtedly enter the temple of Shaolin."
"To gain a more profound understanding... To gain strength from our weaknesses... To become more sincere... To become more righteous... To better control our emotions... To have more peace in our homes."
"To prohibit intentional violence... To rule the actions of the warrior... To edify... To promote virtue... To promote peace among the people... To produce harmony in society... To bring about prosperity."
"Respect for God, Family, Friends, Country"
"Qualities - Humility, Honesty, Confidence, Courage, Strength"
"Responsibility - Sincerity - Justice"
"Be loyal to your country... Be obedient to your parents... Be loving to ones husband or wife... Be cooperative with your brothers... Be respectful to your elders... Be faithful to your teacher... Be faithful to your friends... Kill only in justice and with honor... Never retreat in battle... Always finish what you start."
"Reverence for nature... Physical concentration... Courtesy... Modesty... Thankfulness... Self-sacrifice... Cultivate courage... Chastity... Be strong inside and mild outside... Endurance... Reading ability."
"Purpose of training should be enhancement of the mental and physical self... Sincerity is necessary... Effort is necessary... Consistent schedule during practice... Do your best when training... Train in the basic spirit of the Art... Regularly spaced practice sessions... Obey without objection the word of instructors or seniors; look and learn... Don't be overly ambitious... Pay attention to every aspect of your training... Pay attention to the order of your training... Get instruction step by step in new forms and techniques... Try to overcome feelings of idleness... Cleanliness is desired when practice is finished."
As Christian martial artists we know the importance of Character. God's Word emphasizes the importance of Character. The Bible gives us hundreds of real-life examples of people with good and bad character. Character became an issue early in the lives of the first family. Adam and Eve sinned against God and were banished from the Garden of Eden. Abel displayed excellent character qualities; Cain did not. Cain killed his brother because of bad character. The Bible is filled with stories of the success and failure of character. Noah was an example of good character. Abraham and Lot are examples of good and bad character. Joseph was an example of good character. Moses expressed both good and character. Joshua was an example of good character. Ruth was also an example of good character.
"And now, my daughter, don't be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All my fellow townsmen know that you are a woman of noble character." (Ruth 3:11)
Job was an example of good character with the challenges of being human. David was an example of good and bad character. Read the Bible from front to back and we find everything we need to know about character.
Character is something for which people should strive.
"A wife of noble character is her husband's crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones." (Proverbs 12:4)
"A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies." (Proverbs 31:10)
"Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." (Acts 17:11)
How do we develop character? Are we born with it? Do we inherit it from our parents? Do we get it from our social standing? Is it because of the church or school we attend?
God makes it clear that character is something we develop by clear intention and expression.
"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us." (Romans 5:1-5)
Notice the process:
1) Justified through faith
2) Peace with God through Christ
3) Access by faith into our standing of Grace
4) Rejoice in the hope of the glory of God
5) Rejoice in our sufferings
6) Knowing that suffering produces perseverance
7) Perseverance produces character
8) Character produces hope
9) Hope does not disappoint us because God poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit
Character comes from having
a right relationship with God through faith in Christ followed
by a rejoicing in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces
perseverance and perseverance produces character. Character produces
hope. What does our world need? Hope. That hope comes from character
which is developed by persevering through suffering. These precious
Words written by the Apostle Paul under the inspiration of the
Holy Spirit give us a fresh perspective on dealing with the challenges
of living in this world.

Steve Shober is is a Doctor of Naturopathic Ministries and a Master Herbalist. Steve is Director of Biblical Health Ministries in Wisconsin and has a keen interest in helping Christians enjoy a healthy lifestyle. As Christians and martial artists we have a special interest in being healthy and strong. We asked Steve to share his insights with us in each newsletter this year to help us better understand the gift of health God offers to His children.
Our soul is essentially our mind (personality, character, heart, psyche, emotions, intellect, will, etc). Our mind is plagued with all sorts of health issues. In fact, the Scriptures confirm our soul is polluted with the things of this world, has a bent toward evil, is obsessed with self-gratification, and is innately "me first." Thus, after salvation there is a need to start healing the diseased soul/mind. The need for healing is termed many things but "renewal" is apropos. Renewal of the mind is a major concern of Scripture, and Romans 12:2 is most instructive: "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind...". The new spiritual being created in Christ is now asked to start thinking and behaving in accordance with the new Divine nature. the goal is to remove the pains, wrong value systems and failures of our old life and replace it with that which god has specifically fashioned for us.
Since one's identity determines their behavior, the fact that one is identified with Christ should create a desire to behave accordingly. Thankfully, there is Divine help to accomplish this. The Greek word in Romans 12:2 often translated "transformed" is the basic word "metamorphosed", which means to change (meta) into another form (morph). Just as a caterpillar is metamorphosed into a beautiful butterfly, so too the Lord wants to transform our life. This transformation results in a renewed mind: renewed in principles, outlook, ideals, and values. It also helps release the past with all its problems. The new essential inner nature (resulting from salvation) is now to be revealed in a mind that is continually being renewed and improved.
The passive voice used in Romans 12:2 indicates that the transformed mind is something god will produce in us, but only as we allow Him to work in our lives. Thus, the transformation desired is not a free-gift like salvation, nor is it something we can do on our own, nor is it a one-time event (not a single act of God), nor is it instantaneous. The renewal is an ongoing, lifelong process that is a cooperative venture between us and the indwelling Holy Spirit. Cooperation includes communing with Jesus Christ, studying His Word and applying it to every situation, meditation on the things of Christ so we know how to apply the Word, waling according to the light He has already shown us, and having a heart ready to change/yield to further insights from the Master. It is a process over time in which the mind and heart of the Lord can be imparted to each believer. This is the process by which we become Christ-like in our mind and our life. This is how victory over anger, obsessions, evil thoughts, the past, etc., are replaced with the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, etc., see Galatians 5:22).
Summary: Considering our spirit and soul, we see two interesting principles emerge (principles recognized by those involved in natural health). The first principle is that healing begins from the inside and works outward. Thus, God comes into the deepest recesses of our being, into our very core, and gives new birth to our terminally ill spirit. Then He starts to work outward into our minds. (We have not gotten there yet, but later we will see He then works outward even more to help our physical bodies). The second principle is that healing begins at the top and works downward. Could anything be more true. Overall healing begins with God (top) and comes downward to us.

(We began sharing articles by several Christian martial arts leaders last year about the issue of being Soke of a martial arts system. Here is the latest note from Master Joseph Lumpkin of Karate for Christ and Shinsei Martial Arts.)
Dear Members
We have some issues to talk and pray about. I am truly at a loss as how to progress from here. As you know, 99% of the time I have handled the politics and assaults within this office and have tried not to let them impede the outreach ministries, but I cannot this time. In a way I feel like I am not doing my job for you, since the job as defined by my calling is to minister to the members, be a filter from the world, and point in the general direction of growth. However, there is a saying, "when one cries 'forward!' he must make sure all know the way because the monk and the warrior will charge in opposite directions.
Christ tells us to be careful to take the lower seat at the table because if we take the higher seat and the host comes in and wants to put someone else there we will be removed and embarrassed. If we take the lower seat and the host wishes to move us up to a seat of authority or honor, we will be praised. It is better, to use Mark Barlow's term, to underwhelm than to overwhelm and disappoint.
There are various secular chat rooms and bulletin board groups watching us. They are baffled by all of the titles, founders, heads, sokes, ranks, and such. As a Christian artist, I fully understand that at times we have been forced out of the main stream and have blazed our own trails. We seek to keep the Eastern influences at bay while still training in the arts. This has been an ongoing balance beam we are walking. It would be easy to say, "forget the world and what they think". But we must be better, train harder, and present ourselves as more than is expected. I believe it serves God better if I am a great 6th dan than an average 8th. For this reason, I am dropping the title of Soke from the site and replacing it with Head or Founder. I am also asking you, our members, to contribute ideas as to how we can avoid these further issues. Karate for Christ does not give rank, nor does it judge the validity of rank. As Christians, we should judge ourselves first, before others have a chance to.
Please send
any suggestions to

Thank you all

(We've been following an interesting discussion among Christian martial artists the past couple of months on the subject of how Christian martial arts should best minister. Should we blend our various ministries into one larger ministry or continue in smaller groups? What's the best way to minister to the spiritual needs of the world? We share some of the comments with you for the purpose of considering the important issues being addressed. We have deleted references to individual and organization names unless the notes were sent directly to GMAF. Most were sent to other organizations and shared with us for our newsletter.)
It was unclear to me what end result you desire in the ranks and titles e-mail I received. I do understand and agree with aligning oneself with an "established" system, however you didn't name but three particular styles. Do you wish us to rank thru you or one of these other systems to keep our affiliation...? I also know of some folks whom are trying to establish little kingdoms, if you're taking fees from students to make a living some of that is understandable. If you're doing outreach work it's appalling! I use the patch as a visible tool to show what we're all about {along with our own}... I'm proud to be a part of such organizations but I will not change my method or style of teaching to please or "fit in" with anyone...
Sorry if I was unclear, No. I am not asking anyone to change styles or schools. And no, (we) do not charge for membership... What I wish to say is that there are thousands of Christian martial artists out here but with all of the division and diversity we have lost our ability to be heard as one Christian voice. We should find a way to be heard by gathering ourselves in some way so as to speak with one intention. I feel that one way to do this is to belong to organizations that have established themselves as non-political Christian forces in the arts. Certainly, (we) fit, yet it is not a style so its influence is somewhat limited. I believe it is time for us to move into the mainstream of known styles and organizations so we may influence the world as the light and salt we are... Some dojos may be commercial and some not. We are not. The ones I mentioned were simply those whom I know personally. Possibly this is like Christians staying in church and not proclaiming to the world our faith.
These emails go out to over 500 people. The statements will not apply to many. They are made to provoke thought and self-examination. Any input is welcome and I will be the first to say I see the issues but do not have the answers.
Sir, i respectfully disagree. Validity does not come from man. There are many who claim senior black belt ranks who can not fight or adequately defend themselves in true combat. They have obtained their rank specifically due to them paying each month. I have been fortunate to train in various ways with senior black belts in various styles of hapkido, kuk sool, tae kwon, aiki, and the list goes on. Some of them possessed skill, others had rank due to affiliation with those who possess the power to "legitimately" promote.
If you want (organization) to become "valid", then do it by being the light, not by joining the "darkness" in the attempt to become valid. Let those on the outside see what you are doing by competing and winning in the large venues. Let them take notice by what you have to offer, not by what you want to hang on your wall. If you do not compete, than let them take notice by the product you put out, your students and the knowledge and skill that you possess and pass on to the students. In reality there is nothing new. Nothing I teach is mine. I combine what I perceive from experience in combat as being techniques that can work in real situation based upon past experience in military and law enforcement and street situations. By not being "restricted" by the legalism of many organizations it allows for me to teach from various systems and remove "the artartschniques" that may look good, but leaves too much up to chance. (i.e. 2 and 3 multiple attackers where the self defense is pre arranged and often times the 2nd or 3rd attackers stand in the background for many seconds or minutes and wait for the hapkidoist to finish with the first or second attacker before engaging in the fight. Very unrealistic, but a part of the art nonetheless.).
What I wonder about is why not several of these groups banding together somehow to create a large organization that would have very similar goals and pursuits. The organization would not set standards for how you promote your students in Jujitsu nor mine as they learn Tang Soo Do, Kenpo and some Wado ryu, (primarily TSD). A large group would have many benefits that smaller groups can't provide such as a larger voice to the secular martial arts community, standardization to a certain extent within recognized styles (this could be encouraged not forced), communication such as what you and I are doing, fellowship, sharing of prayer concerns and needs.
This is all ironic to me. Sounds like the Gov't saying we need more organizations and agencies as if by doing so, this will rectify the situations presented to us. If you believe that by placing all these smaller groups together will not involve politics, I believe you are mistaken. Even in Christ's times the "political infighting" was evident, i.e. who will sit on the right or left side of Jesus.
Although the combining of many may be good in thought, much thought in deed needs to be done.
One thing I noticed in the emails from other members is that they seemed to be against affiliating or training with secular or "in the dark schools". My feeling on this is that the best way to reach non Christians is to build relationships with non Christians. By building a relationship IE: friendship they will see Christ in your life and you`re more apt to have an opportunity to witness to them without pressure. I know that before I was saved the people who came on too strong, especially when I didn`t know them really turned me off. I don`t know what's right for (you), but I don`t think we should hesitate to be part of secular organizations. You are doing a great work. If you started your own style for profit like so many do, then God wouldn`t bless the way he has. Our pastor told us that whatever your passion is you can use it for Christ. That's what got me started teaching. God Bless.
I have read with significant interest the various e-mails regarding the future approach/emphasis for (organization). It seems that many people struggle with finding just the right balance between (1) being simply "Christians in the martial arts" or (2) practicing a "Christian Martial Art."
Our approach...
is to be as inclusive as possible in our training and outreach
in order to build personal
relationships with various martial artists -- Christians as well
as non-Christians. We practice traditional... self-defenses within
a Christian club. We pray before class, emphasize proportional
responses to threats and assaults (i.e., "Love your neighbor
as yourself."), and have optional Bible memorization.
As part of this approach, we also participate with (a community) sports program to expand our personal relationships within the... community throughout the southeast and beyond. I have met many excellent practitioners and the Christ-centered patch on my uniform/T-shirts has created several opportunities to discuss my faith. There are active clusters (in our area).
I have been reading the responses to your message about uniting as one voice. I, too, agree that some sort of uniting should be done to make our voice stronger. I wish I had the answer to pass along to you. I think it is a shame that some think we should not affiliate with the "darkness". I think that if Christ was still in bodily form today that he would be right there in the bars, brothels, etc. Why should we confine ourselves to those who already have a relationship with Christ while so many out there don't have that relationship? I think we need to reread the Great Commission to see if we should be out in the secular world. Christ said go out into ALL the world. He didn't say just to those who already believe.
I agree though that with a large organization of believers that the "politics", while not intended, would surface to some degree. I think that's where maybe setting up some sort of generic mission statement would be needed and all would need to agree to it to join the organization. I wish I had an example to give as a starting point, but I am not gifted in that area. <g> I would like to see all the "Christian martial arts organizations" out there united in some form to allow our voice to be heard. I think each organization has their own specific purpose, i.e., children oriented, evangelism oriented, informational oriented, etc., but if we could all be united under one specific mission statement we could have that strong voice we need and want. Maybe a good example of this might be local unions. Each is there for their own plant but have a headquarters so that they have a united voice.
I've been reading your e-mails and believe that you are sincere in your faith. I will pray for Steve and other requests you have made.
I am finding
that many Christians are suspicious of Martial Arts training due
to the far eastern religious
influences. I believe that your witness is strong.
Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you and open the doors for you in
his timing. Consider yourself a missionary on a
journey. You have chosen the martial art as your vehicle to witness,
and if it means opening secular schools to do so, then do
it.
Don't be discouraged!
Run the good race, and the Lord will reward you in the end. Remember
Phil 4:14. I
can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
I'm not sure
I understand all this, however, I would like to share this with
you.
A well respected Christian musician in our area recently took
his band out into the bar scene to play Christian music. I mean
a literal bar where drunk people were. They were well received
and people kept asking them when they were gonna come back and
where else do they play, etc. When asked why he did this, the
musician responded, "Man, why play to the people in the church
who already know about Jesus when we can go out 'there' and use
our gifts to reach those who don't."
I'm not sure about strictly staying in a Christian dojo or a secular
dojo, but I know when I trained in a secular dojo, I had more
opportunities to witness than I do now that I am in a Christian
setting. Not that either one is bad, it's just a matter of what
God has called you to.
I have been
prayerfully reading the various emails regarding (your) focus.
I am not one to use the
discussion board frequently but the Lord has placed it heavy on
my heart to share this with you. Like many of the other sensei's
and soke's that are members of (organization), we try to be as
inclusive as possible trying to maximize our reach and exposure
to the "unchurched". This weekend my competition team
returned from a tournament from which ALL of my students placed
first or second in traditional forms, weapons, and point fighting.
When I returned home elated from our performance and the honor
and glory that we brought the Lord, I sat down to read my emails
and as I was reading your latest email on this subject I received
a phone call. It was a young lady, who lives a few blocks from
my dojo and was interested in signing up with me. After a few
minutes of discussing the benefits of my style, I finally thought
to ask her what brought her to contact me. Did you see my team
at a tournament? Word of mouth? Surely she must have heard about
us locally? Her answer: I found you on the (organization) website!
This young lady SPECIFICALLY sought me ought primarily because
of our faith (location and style were secondary). Here I was thinking
local and not global.
The same is true about our ministries. Too often we get caught up with the day to day ministerial work and lose focus of the BIG picture. Most of us have no idea what the Lord has in store for us in the way of blessings!YES many of us have our own ministry work WITHIN the... membership body but who says we all need to be focused on the same exact aspect of ministry?? We are all ordained with different gifts to serve different needs. Just as the body of Christ is comprised of various denominations(Baptists, Lutherans, Methodists, etc.), so varied is the work we have all been called to do in His name. My gift is teaching children. Someone else's may be performing exhibitions or demos. Another may be serving their community. In that way, we all comprise the body of Christ and most importantly, reflect a mirror image of the one and only Saviour. We must not waver or compromise our faith in order to fit in to the martial arts "mainstream". We are IN this world but not OF this world. When we start worrying about what the secular martial artists think about our style, titles, and ranks, we allow the great Deceiver to take the focus away from Jesus Christ Almighty and place the spotlight on ourselves. YES, as Christian martial artists we must strive to constantly improve our skills. We must be at the top of our personal game (adjusting for the seasons of time). We must not allow the enemy an opportunity to magnify a weakness and dishonor our Heavenly Father. In short, we MUST be different from the secular world; set aside for the Lord. I guess the question to be answered is are we martial artists that believe in Christ or are we Christians that practice our faith in ALL areas of our life (including martial arts)?? It is one thing to accept Christ as Saviour it is a totally different thing to make him LORD - Lord over our ENTIRE LIFE. Personally I feel (organization) greatest contribution is sewing the fabric of our individual ministries together into one giant tapestry that glorifies Him and fulfills His will (not ours). He speaks to each of our hearts in each of our ministries because the need is DIFFERENT for each of His flock that we serve. Just as Jabaz did, I pray that the Lord expand our territories until we see the day that Christian martial artists are the majority. Until that day, I suggest we focus on one goal: Matthew 5:16- "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
I have a thought about the subject that some may not like, but it seems to be the most balanced answer to the entire issue. The short story of why Karate for Christ evolved as it has was in order to give Christian artists a place to gather, albeit in cyberspace. It is here for support and to help fill the needs of other ministers, instructors, and students. The reason Shinsei was developed was to help unite Christians artists and to provide a way out of the political and money hungry mess of secular martial arts orgs and to provide a Christian voice in the arts. As it turns out, this may have added yet another voice to the cacophony out there. When I began the project I did not realize there were so many others attempting the same thing. Some are good, others are trying to build little kingdoms for themselves. You can know them by the control of doctrine and patronage they demand on the students and teachers. Now, we are many and scattered and the martial arts world cannot hear our Christian voices. The answer is to unite under established and recognized styles and with established organizations. Obviously, Karate for Christ is a well established body that has been around since the 60s, but beyond that, I want to urge you who are on your own and you who are running one or two classes as a separate style to find and affiliate with established Christian styles. I am not saying "sell out." I am saying find those men who are established and recognized heads of systems and align yourself with and under them.
Now, don't think you can just walk in and assume a particular rank. All styles have standards they must keep in order that the style be kept respected. But, I believe if you are on your own and are teaching, even if you consider yourself to be head of your own system, if it is does not have a national name, you should find a teacher that does have a standing in the martial arts world and place your voice in concert with those who think as we do. This will bring a much louder voice from Christians into the martial arena. The best thing we can do is to be their students and keep learning from those who have blazed this trail before us.
In closing, let me add that this is what has happened to Shinsei in the last year. With the addition of the voices and abilities of Mr. Covington, Mr Fraizer, and Mr. Hamm, as well as dozens other outstanding instructors and students, we have made ourselves known from opening classes in Trinidad with Mr. Brito, to bringing in 46 gold metals from Mexico.
It is time to come together under banners of like minded leaders and make a stand and a noise for God. The time of wandering in the wilderness is over. Let us gather together ... NOW!
Joseph

"We'd like to hear from you! Let us know what you do in your martial arts ministry that you think is special and we'll share it with the Fellowship. Many members write us each month asking for guidance in developing and expanding their martial arts ministries. Please send your ideas to mmcgee@gmaf.org .
You'll find every GMAF newsletter at http://www.gmaf.org/gmaf_newsletters.html . These newsletters are a gold mine of information about Christianity and the Martial Arts.
Many GMAF members have told us their favorite part of the monthly newsletter is Fellowship News. It's wonderful to see Christian martial artists praying for each other across the United States and around the world. No distance is too far for Christians. The instant we pray, God hears. We impact the lives of our brothers and sisters positively through our prayers. God answers prayer. It is pleasing to Him. Thank you for caring so much for each other!
Here are some of the notes of prayer and praise we received at GMAF the past two months.

Needed Prayer
At 10am this morning I received a prayer request from church. Cathy Mitchell, who attends Spring Hills, called in to our secretary. Her husband, Tony, is an Air Force Commander in Afghanistan. She received an urgent email from him this morning. It said, "We need Christians to pray, pray, pray." Please pray for God's protection of our troops and HIS wisdom for their commanders. Pass this on to as many as you think will respond.
"Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior."
When you receive this, please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our ground troops in Afghanistan. There is nothing attached....! This can be very powerful.
I usually only have time to read the e-mails from KFC and make notes for future prayer time. This time I am asking for a prayer request. My wife is the administrative assistant to the pastor of a church here in our city. Recently the pastor's son was diagnosed with Leukemia. He is six years of age and his name is Joseph Martin. He is currently undergoing treatments in North Carolina. He has the less aggressive form of Leukemia (ALL), however he still has a long road ahead of him. I understand this due to the fact that my brother was a Hodgkins Disease patient when he was sixteen and I was six. My parents had me pray for my brother and helped me to understand the power of prayer and healing through God's grace early on.
Several months ago we were praying for Steve Patton, a member and teacher. Steve had cancer. After our prayers the Lord saw fit to allow Steve a time of full remission. Now the cancer is back with a vengeance. Steve is in pain and need our prayers.
We in Karate for Christ have been discussing our various views of how our ministries fit into the world. Some say we should go out into the world and witness to the lost, others say we should be separate from the world and keep ourselves away from the "dark influences". Some wish to focus on grass roots, local ministries and others wish to form lager umbrella groups for a global voice. In the overall scheme of things these are petty differences compared to what our true purpose is and what we face. Now we come face to face with why we are here. No matter what our beliefs about how we should interact with the world, there can be no opposing view points on how we should minister to those sick and hurting. Not only do we need to pray for Steve, we need to let him know we have his cancer in our spiritual sights. Please pray, and then simply send him an email telling him we are out here for him. The primary reason Karate for Christ exists is to minister... So let's do it. In the mean time, we will stay our course and let God work in us one on one as He always does.

Akayama-Ryu
Jujitsu and Gulf Coast Martial Arts hosted a Winter Training Camp
in Gulf Shores, Alabama on Saturday, January 18 and Sunday, January
19, 2003. The event took place at the White Sands Resort and was
attended by 72 instructors and students.
Saturday morning, Robert Carver, the Vice President of USJJF and
founder of Heiwashin Ryu Jujitsu kicked off the weekend with an
excellent class stressing the aiki aspect of traditional jujitsu..
Chris Dewey, a former Coach of the Year with the USJA shared some
great ideas involving an arm-drag into a throw and finishing with
a pin. Daryl Covington, a Hapkido instructor, taught several exciting
takedowns and escapes using leg locks. Marlin Sims, the South
Eastern regional representative for Kuk Sool Won used charts and
a human skeleton for a fascinating lecture on how and why wrist
and arm locks work. Vann Bushnell demonstrated several throws
from the Yoshinkan Aikido curriculum and his Uke demonstrated
great ukemi. Mark Barlow of Akayama-Ryu Jujitsu closed out the
day stressing the importance of relaxation and deflecting of force.
Joseph Lumpkin, the chief instructor of Shinsei Jujitsu started
the workout Sunday morning. Lumpkin Sensei is also the President
of Karate for Christ, an international organization promoting
harmony and spiritual growth through martial training. Craig Hamm,
the senior student and representative for Shinsei Jujitsu taught
ground defenses and pins. Barlow closed out the weekend with a
few of Akayama-Ryu escapes and counters.
Akayama-Ryu hosts Camps in Gulf Shores each Winter and Summer.
A variety of instructors and styles are represented and all styles
and ranks are welcome. This is the 21st year for Akayama-Ryu to
host a seminar in Gulf Shores and this Camp brought together martial

From Moldova
Vasile Filat
The Tae Kwon Do Club "Stolas Leukas"
"He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white."
Revelation 3:5
The Tae Kwon Do Club "Stolas Leukas" was founded in September, 1997 by Vasile Filat in the country of Moldova. Our aim is to of share the gospel with youth through the martial arts and bible study.
As I wrote
you in my last letter, after I led a seminar for the instructors
of Taekwon-Do Club "Stolas Leukas" we where to start
some new group in the new localities. My disciple Grigorie Cheptene
went
to the town of Cupcini and by the help of the pastor started in
that are a group. So, there came 95 students and they are still
coming. That's why he had to do two groups. Now, when the parents
found that Grigorii is teaching the Bible systematical and intensively
some of them try to stop their children who are so eager to learn
at our club. The parents come to object Grigorii every day about
the Bible study, but Grigorii uses every of this opportunities
to share the Gospel with this people. Now, Grigorii is invited
to start another group in the main city of the other county which
is Edinet. So, he will start
soon a group there. Pray for Grigorii's strength and for all the
young people who came that they will accept the Gospel and will
grow spiritually to become true disciples of Jesus Christ and
missionaries.
Other our instructor,
Valeriu Vizitiu has about 100 students in 4 towns and he is going
trough persecution now. In October he was invited by the missionary
who is planting a church in Causeni to start a Taekwon-Do group
there. So, Valeriu started and there came a lot of young people
and they study the Bible. But then, the orthodox priest agitated
the people in his church and they brought police to stop the training.
So, the policeman is trying to make a lot of problems to Valeriu
to stop him. Please pray for this and also for the financial situation
of Valeriu. His mother divorced his father who is sick of
cancer and is about to die. Valera's brother and sister are outside
the country and he is the only one to take care for his father.
His father was an abusive man, but Valeriu shared the Gospel to
him and
treated him with love. As a result his father accepted Jesus.
May God bless you!
With love in Christ,
Vasile
Our Karate
for Christ Team is competing at the World Cup events in Mexico.
(not the world games as I stated before. sorry for the mistake.)
These are high level events. The finals will take place in Greece
one week before the Olympics. The purpose is to draw attention
to Martial Art events and hopefully find a place for Jujitsu.
Kickboxing and the like in the Olympic games.
They have done quite well, placing in first, second, or third in many categories.
Please continue to pray. We will be going to Greece in 2004. Thanks to out team, Karate for Christ will be represented in the World Cup.
Could you please add Deborah Kirkus to your prayer requests listing? She will be going in for surgery today to remove a cancerous tumor in her colon. She is 34 years old and has 3 children; the youngest is less than 2 years old. She and her family live in Maryland. Please pray for God's healing and encouragement.
Thank you,
In Christ,
Sifu Lane Cox, PMAA Chairman

Praise report: The class has grown by leaps and bounds. We are up to approx. 45 students and really don't have room for many more. I have been getting several reports of students being helped by the teaching both in the home and in school. I don't know if this ministry is a bigger blessing to the student or to me. The Lord has really been good to us and everything we have done has worked out so great. Its amazing.

Greetings
in Jesus' Name!
We are really amazed by this winter wonder-land here in Michigan! It can be so beautiful even though it is so cold! It's actually fun to slip and slide a little here and there.
Work is going well, and I meet some pretty interesting people. I have been working at lining up some Gospel karate demos as well as three possible locations for Christian karate clubs once a week, including a Home School Building. I'd appreciate your prayers about that.
We are also actively searching for housing to see what we can get into. Since we have just moved from over-seas, it is not an easy task, nor is it easy to qualify. The whole family is anxious to get into their own place.
We continue with House of Grace Ministries with a different geographical location and a home assignment for now as we look to minister through Gospel karate demos and clubs and every other way that God would open up for us. We appreciate your continued support and prayers for us as we address this stage of our ministry and dealing with our girls' educational needs.

It's me Barry from the Caribbean. There something I think I should share with you all it happen last year July. I have just came form training and I was on my way home when I was confronted by some guys from the area. They started verbally abuse me and they wanted to fight. I try to clam them down but it was useless they started throwing objects. I try to walk away and they threw me into the bushes. Everyone in my community saw what happen. I told my sensei what have happen and he said that I have done the right thing by walking away. For awhile I did not understand what he meant by that because everyone in my neighborhood knew I do karate and I could of take those guys but now I look like bully but I have forgotten what I was thought that fighting would not solve anything .The next month the same guys walk up to me and said they were sorry about what have happen. I was shocked. It was like I was dreaming. Jason one of the guys he said that they saw me training in the dojo with my team and they said that I could of taken out if I wanted but I just stood there and took everything. The funny thing about this is that there was hope for these guys and they wanted to change they wanted to something profitable way they could feel belongness. At this present time we are the best of friends and they in my karate studio and they are getting better everyday. Now I understand why fighting does not solve anything. These boys are also involve in the church in our neighborhood.
I just wanted you guys to know that God work rules.

I have teamed up with Wendy Williams. I am sure you all know about her book on Christian martial arts. Anyway I have agreed to place it on CMAA's site and whoever wishes to purchase it may do so. She will handle all the purchasing and shipping. We will only list her book. All who purchase the book will send the money to her and in return she will send to one of our outreach ministries [the profit after cost].
In closing I would like to challenge all to consider the same. If you have a association, then please consider doing the same. Place her book on your site, make it available to everyone world wide so the profits can go to assist those in need. Remember it is our job to support those who carry and share the Good News of Christ our Lord. Our association's main purpose is to start and help support outreach programs that use martial arts as its tool to share Christ. Our every means of support and income goes to support this desire. I pray that your desire will come to be the same, that your associations will start these type of Exemption programs for pastors and deacons who operate a non profit outreach martial arts program in their church.
God bless all, Robert Graham/CMAA
Please pray for my family in Kansas. I just received an email that my sister's husband just passed away while they were visiting their children (and grandchildren) in Topeka. One of the sacrifices we make as missionaries is losing loved ones and not being able to be there to comfort our own families.
God bless,

Olympic dream
becomes reality for Selmer's Craig Hamm
Dan Morris
The Jackson Sun
Feb 2 2003
Craig Hamm, a lifelong Selmer resident, has dreamed of competing in the Olympics since his teenage years.
At age 35, he's as close as he can get to his goal through karate, his chosen sport. Karate is not a sanctioned Olympic event, but exhibitions will be allowed at the 2004 Olympics in Greece. Last weekend in Cancun, Mexico, Hamm kicked the competition to win two gold medals and a silver in the Masters Division for sixth-degree black belts. The golds came in weaponry and self defense; the silver in kata (forms).
As a member of the U.S. National Martial Arts team, last weekend's success qualifies Hamm to compete in the Olympic exhibitions. He was surprised by a party in his honor Saturday at the Wyatt House Garden and Restaurant in Selmer.
"Normally, when I compete, I'm not nervous," said Hamm, who returned home to Selmer late Thursday. "But this time (at Cancun), my hands were a little sweaty, and that's very unusual. This time, things were a little more intense. It was my first international tournament, and it was an experience."
About 25 athletes from five countries competed in Hamm's division. He said judges gave him high nines out of 10 points in his gold-medal performances. He was beaten 9.7 to 9.5 in the forms.
"The toughest part of karate is the self-discipline," Hamm said. "It's not like football, baseball and basketball. You have to rely on yourself and your abilities. It's mostly a competition against yourself."
Hamm and his wife, Angela, run Hamm's Martial Arts school in downtown Selmer, a business they opened in 1994. They have a 3-year-old son, Lucas Drake. Hamm must pay his own way to Greece; so he'll beat the bushes to gain corporate sponsors the next 12 months. The sponsorships are tax deductible. If you're interested in helping, call Hamm at (731) 646-1622.
"I'm actually representing two groups - the U.S. national team and Karate for Christ International," Hamm said. "The Lord has worked things my way so I can go; and I'll be representing Him, too."
Hamm said he's been told no one from Selmer has ever competed at the Olympics; so he's proud to have the opportunity.
"I've lived here all my life," he said. "To get this chance is a dream come true."

Joseph,
Thanks for the call this morning after the Space Shuttle's tragedy. You are right in remembering that our research group at Auburn University is designing and building a complex instrument that has been scheduled for delivery to the International Space Station in 10 months. Previous schedules now have little meaning as we focus our hearts and prayers on those that perished, the families that grieve, and the thousands of managers, scientists, engineers and technicians that surely tonight wonder if their work, in any way, contributed to our nation's loss today. Please pray for them all and ask that KFC members pray for them.
God's Word tells us that all things can work for His Good. Also pray that peoples' hearts all over the world will be softer tomorrow as they reflect on this disaster and that they will have less confidence in the flesh and the abilities of the flesh -- whether of the strong and quick mind or the strong and quick arm. Pray that God will use today's events to draw many to Him. I believe that President Bush's words today were wonderful in this regard. God bless our President!
